I tell you, if this Ecclestone affair manages to cost Gordon Brown his job
then I will love him even more than I do now :-)

Rahal deal done

 ITV-F1

ChampCar legend Bobby Rahal is definitely on his way to Formula 1,
taking over as the new team boss at Jaguar next season.

Rahal was targeted by Jaguar’s owners, Ford, because the team has
had a miserable debut season in Formula 1. The deal is expected to
be announced before the US Grand Prix at Indianapolis this weekend.

Rahal has no real F1 track record – his only experience of the
sport is two grand prix with Wolf in 1978 – but he is widely
respected as a leader and an organiser. In recent years he has even
been running the ChampCar series as well as his own racing team.

A triple ChampCar champion, Rahal will help raise the profile of F1
in the US. He has close ties with Ford, who supply engines to his
team, and was seen by company president Jac Nasser as the man to
turn Jaguar around. They have scored just three points all year and
have been dogged by both performance and reliability problems.

Rahal, 47, is close friends with McLaren technical director Adrian
Newey. Speculation is already mounting that one of his first jobs
will be to persuade the man regarded as F1’s best designer to switch
teams when his contract expires in 2002.

Rahal will not be the only top ChampCar name to move to F1 ahead of
next season. Reigning champion Juan Pablo Montoya is likely to be
confirmed as a Williams driver this weekend. Team owner Barry Green
is being linked with a move to BAR, who like Jaguar have
underachieved given the resources at their disposal.

Rahal named as new team boss

Ex-Cart champ to head-up Jaguar Racing as CEO and president for 2001

Bobby Rahal was today unveiled as Jaguar Racing’s new team principal
and chief executive officer. The three-times CART champion will
officially join the team on 1 December 2000, at the completion of the
current CART season. He will relocate to the United Kingdom to take up
the post and, until that time, will continue to serve as interim CART
CEO and president, working to complete the agenda set forth when
accepting the American position in June.

Neil Ressler, who was charged with making the announcement during a
press conference at Indianapolis Motor Speedway today [Wednesday],
will remain as chairman of Jaguar Racing but, under the new management
structure, Rahal will assume responsibility for the day-to-day running
of the team.

"Of course, Bobby Rahal’s driving career speaks for itself, and needs
no endorsement from me," a delighted Ressler said, "I have come to
know and respect Bobby during the period when Team Rahal became a
Ford Motor Company works team in the CART series.

"His knowledge of racing at the highest level, together with his
business acumen and demonstrated leadership capability, uniquely
qualifies him to join us at Jaguar Racing."

Rahal admitted, after weeks of refusing to acknowledge that the move
was more than a rumour, that he was relishing the challenge of his new
task in Formula One.

"It is a huge honour to be asked by Ford Motor Company and Jaguar
Racing to take over this role,” he said, ”I have no doubt about the
immensity of the task in front of me, but feel strongly that, with the
assistance of the fine people at Jaguar Racing, we can realise the
potential that this effort represents.

"I am particularly appreciative to Neil Ressler for his faith in me. I
look forward to working with Eddie [Irvine] and Luciano [Burti] and
helping them achieve their goals. As a young man, Formula One was my
goal. While I had the privilege of competing in two grands prix, I was
unable to complete my dreams at that time. However, I must say that
taking this new position is in no small way a realisation of that
dream. I look forward to the challenge."

During a distinguished 17-year racing career, Rahal won the PPG Cart
World Series championship in 1986, 1987 and 1992, amassing 24
victories, 18 pole positions and 88 podium finishes from his 265
starts. He also won the 1986 Indianapolis 500.

He became the first rookie owner/driver to win the championship title
with the Rahal/Hogan operation in 1999, and his current team, Team
Rahal, was founded in 1995 with a two-car team in the CART series now
piloted by Kenny Brack and Max Papis.

Rahal has competed professionally in Indycars, Formula One, Formula
Two and Formula Three, as well as NASCAR Winston Cup, SCCA Trans-Am,
IMSA GTP, Formula Atlantic and the International Race of Champions
[IROC].

First-time GPs

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:02 am

When I went to the first F1 race at Long Beach (1976) there was a (Ferrari
:-( procession.

The wisdom of the day was that with a new track the chances are that only
one team will ‘get it right’ and the rest will struggle.  That year the
events matched the theory.

Does the theory still hold?  Trying to think of other ‘first events’:
Donnington ’93 was hotly (actually wetly) contested.  Malaysia last year
was, umm, suspenseful but not dramatic.

Any other observations of ‘firsts’ relevant to this weekend’s festivities?

[ANNOUNCE] [FAQ] Charter for rec.autos.sport.f1.moderated

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:01 am

—–BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE—–

The charter is posted to the group every 14 days. If you do not wish
to retrieve it again, please killfile the subject line of this post.

CHARTER: rec.autos.sport.f1.moderated

Note: This Charter is intended to be read in conjunction with the
Moderation Policy which is appended.

(a)  Rationale

The goal of rec.autos.sport.f1.moderated (hereafter RASF1M) is
to provide a forum for the discussion of Formula One racing.  It
differs from the existing English language newsgroups for F1
(eg: rec.autos.sport.f1) in that it is moderated: the intention
of this is to retain the opportunities for discussing Formula
One currently found in other groups while preventing the spam,
commercial posts, abuse directed towards F1 personalities and
teams, participant abuse and postings completely unrelated to F1
racing which can also be found there.

The guiding principle for all moderators will be to interfere as
little as possible with the discussions, whilst maintaining
adherence to the Charter and Policy.

(b)  On- and off-charter postings

This group exists to provide opportunities for discussion about
Formula One. This can be assumed to cover topics such as races,
results, drivers, teams, circuits, trips to races, gossip,
rumours, sponsorship, reports of comments made by F1 personnel,
careers of former F1 drivers, news items, rules, safety and
     upcoming events involving F1 personnel.

It would be inappropriate and indeed impossible for a newsgroup
charter to give an exhaustive list of what is and isn’t
acceptable.  However, postings which have no connection at all
to Formula One are unlikely to qualify.  The final arbiter of
this will be the moderators, working within the guidelines of
     the Policy as appended.

Any submission which is relevant, civil and not in violation of
the moderation policy will be accepted for posting.

(c)  Moderation Policy

This is appended to the Charter and is divided into three
     sections:

     1.  Restrictions on Articles
     2.  Moderators’ Role
     3.  General Administration

Formula One has lost the plot!

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:20 am

Why wasn’t the race stopped? 11 laps behind the safety car! And who’s idea
was it to change the first chicane into that ridiculous version? What was
wrong with the old chicane? Never saw anybody life endangered by it. Do they
think by putting in slower chicanes and reducing average lap speeds that
they’ll improve the safety of F1? It is a joke as the cars are no slower
than last years so the theoretical reduction in speed doesn’t contribute to
any perceived safety improvement. If anything it is more dangerous as cars
have to brake from high speed to slower speeds for the tighter chicanes.

Where is this sport heading? If it wasn’t for Ferrari’s presence the sport
would end up imploding very quickly.

Monza hilights on web ?

Is there a web site showing last Monza race hilights?
Comments, pictures and/or videos…

Mika crying again.

I see MH is complaining that MS was weaving at the start of the Monza GP?
What crap, having RB beside him, this has got to be straightest I have ever
seen the pole sitter move off the start line. Compared to the start where DC
first crossed in front of MS who was on his right, and then pushed him left
into Fisi, this has got to be hypocracy in the extreme.
