What about the year McLaren dominated F1?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:40 pm

I seem to have read that in the year 1988(?) McLaren Honda dominated F1
winning 15 out of 16 races… Was there a dominance factor at that time
too? I mean, was it the #1 driver who won most of the time…

I was 8 and didn’t know about the existence of F1, so please excuse the
ignorance

New viewing figures

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:40 pm

The Guardian is reporting the overnights for tv viewing yesterday.

600,000 people watched the race live in the UK, and 2m watched the
afternoon repeat. That’s by far-and-away the lowest figures this season
I’ve seen reported.

By contrast, an average of 2.2m watched the Chicago marathon
yesterday…

Actually, two things.

Firstly, congratulations to Ferrari on achieving something which I
would never have thought possible……getting their lead driver
through an entire season without a single mechanical mishap in the
races. OK, luck on their side – just last weekend, Michael missed a
whole session with hydraulic problems – but still a remarkable
demonstration of team focus and concentration. (After all, the drivers
are irrelevant if the cars break down.)

Secondly, isn’t it nice to have gone through a whole season without a
single fatality or serious injury…..particularly after the tragedies
of the previous couple of seasons. Once again, some luck involved –
and always room for improvement – but if the regulations on crash
testing and driver protection weren’t as good as they are then we
could well have lost Sato and McNish for good.

This repeat must have done well first time round to get a repeat at
this time of year and this time of day. Watch the CCTV film of JH
attacking a bouncer in a night club, bad idea! (I say "attack", it
looks more like attempted grevious bodily harm using a paper cup, but
perhaps that’s just the poor quality of the  film. No wonder those
soocer players got off recently!) JH gets off when the police
(obviously big fans) tell the bouncer who he is.

C4 currently have all sorts of peak-time problems though so that may
explain this repeat.

The "Skirts Controvesy" (error in Discovery show 2)

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:39 pm

Been watching The Secret World Of Formula 1 on Discovery. Episode 2
said aerodynamic skirts were banned for 1981. Since I only started
watching F1 in the Autumn of that year and remember lots of references
to skirts I knew it was an error somehow.

>From "The Ultimate Encyclopeadia Of Formula 1" 1995, by Bruce Jones;

(Brabham here is a now defunct team not the Aussie driver, Zolder
staged the Belgian GP)

"1981 ….. The championship began proper at Long Beach and with
sliding skirts officially banned ….. Brabham had perfected a
hydro-pneumatic suspension system – the car was legal in the pits, but
on the track it sat down and the skirts touched the ground ….. The
disputes continued with a ban on flexible skirts ……. Zolder ……
and the skirt business rumbled on."

They were banned once and for all but not for 1981, though I can’t
remember the exact year they were finally outlawed completely (someone
post up). I seem to remember about 83 or 84 (side-pods were
drastically altered in 83 and I think that may have killed them off).

Speaking of Brabham I remember reading Nelson Piquet (champion in the
Brabham again in 83) somehow had illegal fuel that year but Renault
(Alain Prost their main driver) choose not to protest to get the title
that way, but it’s often reported they would have got Brabham deducted
many points if they had done so and Piquet won by 2 (or more likely 1
since Prost probably won more races).

I seem to remember also Brabham was Bernie’s team throughout this
time!

Why?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:38 pm

Why does there seem to be such a consensus that to "improve F1" aero grip
should be lessened and mechanical grip increased – why, in the face of that
does F1 do the opposite?

First tires get grooved.  Now we have ludicrous proposals – drivers play
musical chairs!  What’s next – lap dances during pit stops to "improve the
show"?  How about on the podium the 1st three have to eat a box of Cream
Crackers and the first to whistle God Save the Queen is the winner?

Dear me.  We seem to be losing CART and these people seem intent on taking
F1 down faster.

Wurz breaks Catalunya record

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:17 am

Alexander Wurz has broken the Catalunya lap record, in the MP4-17B,
with components that will go in next years car.
While almost all sites mentioned that he was faster than the second
guy, DC, by 2 seconds, only Yahoo Sports mentions he was faster than
Schumacher’s qualifying lap record (2001 Pole).
http://sports.yahoo.com/m/sm/news/reuters/20021002/reu-racingwurz2002…

It is significant that he just did not break the race lap record, but
the qualifying record (a very unladen setup).
So there is hope after all !
