2010 entry list

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 3:02 pm

The "official" entry list has been posted by the FIA (on the deadline
set by their 2010 sporting regulations):

No Driver                  Entrant                   Constructor
1  Jenson BUTTON (GB)      VODAFONE McLAREN MERCEDES McLAREN MERCEDES
2  Lewis HAMILTON (GB)     VODAFONE McLAREN MERCEDES McLAREN MERCEDES

3  Nico ROSBERG (D)        BRAWN GP FORMULA ONE TEAM BRAWN MERCEDES

8  Fernando ALONSO (E)     SCUDERIA FERRARI MARLBORO FERRARI

9  Rubens BARRICHELLO (BR) AT&T WILLIAMS             WILLIAMS COSWORTH
10 Nico HULKENBERG (D)     AT&T WILLIAMS             WILLIAMS COSWORTH

11 Robert KUBICA (PL)      RENAULT F1 TEAM           RENAULT

14 Adrian SUTIL (D)        FORCE INDIA F1 TEAM       FORCE INDIA MERCEDES

22 TBA                     US F1 TEAM                US F1 COSWORTH
23 TBA                     US F1 TEAM                US F1 COSWORTH

24 Timo GLOCK (D)          VIRGIN RACING             VIRGIN COSWORTH
25 TBA                     VIRGIN RACING             VIRGIN COSWORTH

No major surprises.  Minor surprises:

- While Manor’s expected renaming to Virgin Racing has taken place,
Brawn’s to Mercedes Grand Prix is relegated to a footnote saying
they’ve indicated their "intention" to do so.

- Neither Toyota nor [BMW] Sauber is listed.  Another footnote:
"Toyota Motorsport GmbH remains formally bound by the Concorde
Agreement to put forward a team for participation, though it has
indicated that it will not be in a position to do so.  "An
announcement will be made regarding this entry in due course."
Whoever ends up running in the 13th slot will evidently be
assigned numbers 26 and 27; wonder if Bernie will put them at
the end of the pit lane.

Non-surprises:

- Drivers listed.
– Confirmation of Renault power for Red Bull.  Really, what other
   possibility was there?

Likely red herring:

- The "Constructor" for entrant Campos Meta 1 reflects the folks
actually building the car ("Campos Dallara"); the omission of
mention of an engine is almost certainly an oversight.

Thanks for that. A lot more change than we’ve seen in the lineup for

Idle question – I wonder how many seasons have had a team where both

Heh. Discussed at length here a few weeks ago, Brian came up with the
    stats, I believe.

Two former WDCs in same team

     1953-54  Ferrari     G Farina (50) & A Ascari (52, 53)
    1967-68  Lotus       G Hill (62) & J Clark (63 & 65)
    1974     McLaren     D Hulme (67) & E Fittipaldi (72)
    1986     McLaren     K Rosberg (82) & A Prost (85)
    1989     McLaren     A Prost (85-86) & A Senna (88)

Jim Clark was killed in 1968 after competing alongside Hill in the first GP.

    A related trivia item.

Former WDC driving #2 (since early in 1973)

     1986  McLaren   K Rosberg      [A Prost #1]
    1989  McLaren   A Prost        [A Senna #1]
    1993  Williams  A Prost        [D Hill #0]
    1994  Williams  A Senna        [D Hill #0]
    1994  Williams  N Mansell      [D Hill #0]

Before 1973 the numbers were not fixed. In 1994 neither Senna nor Mansell drove
in many races. Lewis Hamilton will drive #2 in 2010.

Thanks – I should have remembered Prost and Senna, at least. Rosberg
was before I started paying attention.

I’m glad you’d already worked this out a while back, Brian – I’d hate
to have put you through the trouble!

Interesting then that 2010 will be the first time that the two most recent
champions are in the same team :-)

    Nah, that’s happened a lot – 2007, for example (Alonso and Alonso :-) .

LOL… nice. In that case were there 7 former world champions driving for
    Ferrari in ’06? 8)

McLaren are experienced at running two WDCs together. Perhaps the
Prost/Senna combination was the best – we’ll see what 2010 brings.

    a) I know you have this on a massive databse, probably using a 64
processor cluster to access it, but aren’t you afraid that your head
    might explode?

    b) how many times has a WDC driven for a different team in his
    defending year?

Those days have long since gone. IIRC, the current system is now based
on constructors positions, after the WDC getting 1 & his team mate 2.

Correct.  Presumably the four new teams will be at the end (basis of
ordering is unclear).  Not obvious where Sauber Qadbak would go (if
their entry is permitted); for that matter one can’t be certain Mercedes
    will get 3 & 4 given that Brawn didn’t keep the 18 & 19 due Honda after
    2008.

Nothing official on drivers here at this writing.

When the three new teams were announced in June (?), they were listed
alphabetically as Campos, Manor & USF1, Lotus were added later when
BMW pulled out. That may be how the FIA will order them, or maybe not.

I believe that the FIA are still keeping the Toyota grid slots ‘warm’,
because Toyota as a current Concorde signatory still effectively ‘own’
those slots. Toyota would have been allocated car numbers 9 & 10, so,
if their place does got to Qadbak/Sauber the numbers may well be
carried over. I suspect that Qadbak may need to buy the grid slots
    from Toyota, but who knows?

These are my provisional numbers for 2010:

    McLaren        1 & 2      Button & Hamilton
    Mercedes       3 & 4      [Rosberg & Heidfeld?]
    Red Bull       5 & 6      Vettel & Webber
    Ferrari        7 & 8      Alonso & Massa
    Williams       9 & 10     Barrichello & Hulkenberg
    Renault       11 & 12     Kubica & ?
    F India       14 & 15     Liuzzi [& Sutil?]
    T Rosso       16 & 17     Buemi [& Alguersuari?]
    Campos        18 & 19     Senna
    Manor/Virgin  20 & 21     Glock
    USF1          22 & 23
    Lotus         24 & 25
    Qadbak/Sauber 26 & 27

If the Toyota/Sauber swap does occur and Sauber get 9 & 10, the others
(from Williams down) would all move down one place (two numbers).

Rosberg’s confirmed.  On the other hand Mercedes says they’re in no
hurry to name their second entry, which suggests that, at most, Heidfeld
will get it if something else doesn’t pan out.

So what would "something else" be?  I don’t rate the rumors of
Schumacher or Räikkönen, but perhaps Joe Saward’s suggestion of Kubica
(premised on Renault falling back to engine supplier or pulling out
    entirely) has some merit?

Well, today’s "report" from Speed TV says that Schumacher continues to
say "we’ll see" and such.  And Kimi seems to have written off an F1
    ride for 2010.

In other news, it’s been confirmed that I won’t be driving for
    USF1.:-)
