Atmosphere of resignation among F1 camp

"That’s as fast as our car goes and we are going as fast as our car goes.
That’s it. There’s not much you can do about it," said Montoya. Montoya’s
mood of resignation was shared by McLaren for whom David Coulthard was
fourth. At least the Scotsman finished.

"Nobody had a chance against the Ferraris," said Norbert Haug, Mercedes
technical director.

The mood was shared by many drivers.

There will undoubtedly be another 1-2 win by Ferrari at Monza.

Overtaking Statistics – Spa Francorchamps

NOT the Brian Lawrence statistics but following his method as well as I can
based on the lap chart available.  As is apparent, the clock has gone back
to 1958.  With all the current fuss about passing (lack thereof) I though it
would be interesting to compare; I was surprised by the results.

Lap Place  Passer (Passed)
=================================
2        1       Musso   (Brooks)
2        3       Hawthorn (Gendebien)
2        5       Gregory (Lewis Evans)
2        6       Lewis Evans (Brabham) – I think
2        8       Allison (Schell)
3        1       Brooks (Musso)
3        9       ?  (Schell)
3      12       Bonnier (Trintignant)
4        1       Musso (Brooks)
Gendebien drops to last after a spin)
5        1       Brooks (Musso)
5        7       Gregory (Brabham)
5        9       Schell (Salvadori)
8        5       Salvadori ( Brabham?)
8      11      Gendebien (de Felippis)
11      4      Salvadori (Allison)
11    10      Gendebien (Godia?)
13      6      Schell (Brabham?)
13      7      Trintignant (Brabham? who expired shortly)
16      8      Gendebien  (Gregory – also)
18      7      Gendebien (Trintignant)
19      5      Schell (Salvadori)
21      6      Gendebien (Salvadori)
23      7      Trintignant (Salvadori)

That’s 24 passes – a bit over the current era average of 17.  The 17 number,
though, is a bit skewed by some really astonishing events (51 passes at Spa
in ’97 !?!)

Starter motors

Can anyone tell me roughly when F1 cars ceased to have onboard starters? It
strikes me as pretty silly to spend so much money on building and racing F1
cars, only to throw it all away if the car stalls on the grid.  If I was a
sponsor, I wouldn’t be happy watching my investment being pushed off the
track by the marshalls for the sake of an electric motor and a battery……

testing at monza!?!?! a week before the monza GP!?!?!?

"this week’s testing session at the Monza circuit, home of next
weekend’s Italian Grand Prix"

is this really happening or has my brain misnderstood something? instead
of doing the respected thing of using (the broadcasted/attended)
practise on friday and saturday before the Monza GP most teams are
testing at the circuit the very week before!? that is the dumbest and
most arrogant thing i think the Circus that is F1 has ever thrown up!

so F1 is now a business and a circus and CART has all but died. oh well,
they kept me entertained throughout the nineties. i suppose i should
take up watching football like everyone else as this just isnt sport any
more.

so long my open wheeled friends

come on Fulham!!!!               (ladies :-)

Book Help Requested

Does anyone have access to and could share with me the
missing text from the following reference work:

"Great Encyclopedia of Formula 1 : 1950-2000."  Constable &
  Robinson, London, 2000.

The text in which I am particularly interested is that covering
the Ligier cars, pages 340-344.  (The text that currently
occupies those pages is a duplicate of the text earlier in the
Ligier section, although they seem to have flowed it around the
pictures that seem to be in their correct positions. :-)
However, I haven’t been carefully through the whole two volume
set yet, and if the same thing has happened elsewhere, I would
be interested in discovering that text, as well.)

Thank you for any help.

[FAQ] [ADMIN] Charter for rec.autos.sport.f1.moderated

—–BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE—–

The charter is posted to the group every 14 days. If you do not wish
to retrieve it again, please killfile the subject line of this post.

CHARTER: rec.autos.sport.f1.moderated

Note: This Charter is intended to be read in conjunction with the
Moderation Policy which is appended.

(a)  Rationale

The goal of rec.autos.sport.f1.moderated (hereafter RASF1M) is
to provide a forum for the discussion of Formula One racing.  It
differs from the existing English language newsgroups for F1
(eg: rec.autos.sport.f1) in that it is moderated: the intention
of this is to retain the opportunities for discussing Formula
One currently found in other groups while preventing the spam,
commercial posts, abuse directed towards F1 personalities and
teams, participant abuse and postings completely unrelated to F1
racing which can also be found there.

The guiding principle for all moderators will be to interfere as
little as possible with the discussions, whilst maintaining
adherence to the Charter and Policy.

(b)  On- and off-charter postings

This group exists to provide opportunities for discussion about
Formula One. This can be assumed to cover topics such as races,
results, drivers, teams, circuits, trips to races, gossip,
rumours, sponsorship, reports of comments made by F1 personnel,
careers of former F1 drivers, news items, rules, safety and
     upcoming events involving F1 personnel.

It would be inappropriate and indeed impossible for a newsgroup
charter to give an exhaustive list of what is and isn’t
acceptable.  However, postings which have no connection at all
to Formula One are unlikely to qualify.  The final arbiter of
this will be the moderators, working within the guidelines of
     the Policy as appended.

Any submission which is relevant, civil and not in violation of
the moderation policy will be accepted for posting.

(c)  Moderation Policy

This is appended to the Charter and is divided into three
     sections:

     1.  Restrictions on Articles
     2.  Moderators’ Role
     3.  General Administration

[FAQ] [ADMIN] rec.autos.sport.f1.moderated Guidelines

X-Mailer: Newsgroup FAQ Posting Script
X-Changes: None Recently
X-Killfile: faq-guide-rasf1m
X-Last-Updated: Never
Followup-To: sender

rec.autos.sport.f1.moderated Posting Guidelines
===============================================

These guidelines have been put together to help you make sure that
your post stays within the charter and the spirit of the moderation
policy. Some of these guidelines are based on accepted "Netiquette"
for newsgroups, and as such are covered in more detail in RFC 1855
(see http://acwww.bloomu.edu/net.html for a full copy).

This is not a replacement for the charter and moderation policy. It
is a summary of both and also contains some points that do not appear
in either. Remember, posts must relate to Formula 1.

1. Please DO NOT post HTML. A lot of commonly used news readers give
you the option of posting in "plain text" or "rich text" &/or
"HTML". Please make sure you have your software set up for plain
text as HTML postings are unnecessarily large, and a lot of people
are not able to read them.

2. Please DO NOT post MIME/UUEncoded messages. Again, they take up
a lot of bandwidth, and some people are unable to handle them.

3. Please DO NOT post BINARIES. e.g. Pictures, sounds, programs etc.
These are large and may result in some servers refusing to carry
   the group.

4. Please post binaries to alt.binaries.pictures.vehicles or put
them on a web site and then POST A POINTER ONLY (include the
Newsgroup, Subject and Message-ID or the URL) in rasf1m.

5. Please write in English otherwise the moderators may not
necessarily be able to understand your post, and may have to
   reject it.

6. When responding to a post, please quote ONLY the points to which
you are replying and snip any irrelevant portions. Particularly
objectionable is quoting a large post in entirety to add a
   line or two of comment.

7. Please put your response *below* the text you are quoting.
This is standard Internet practice, and makes it easier for
people to follow what you are saying.

8. Please only use PGP signatures when necessary.

9. Don’t send mail or posts simply to point out errors in typing and
   spelling.

10. If someone posts in a newsgroup, they usually expect you to
reply via the newsgroup. Only reply via e-mail if necessary, or
if your post would breach the charter/moderation policy.

11. Don’t get involved in flame wars.  Flaming is against the
charter, so if incendiary material does appear, please leave it
to the moderators to deal with.  If you are offended by a post,
please contact the moderators with your concerns rather than add
    to the thread.

12. Use [SPOILER] tags. If posting within 48 hours of a race, and
your post contains information that may spoil the race for
someone who hasn’t watched it yet, please put [SPOILER] in the
subject, and make sure your subject doesn’t give away
    information about the race.

Some articles may be flagged as press statements [PRESS], and
these by their nature may well contain spoiler material
    (see 13).

13. If you are posting unexpurgated press releases, please use the
[PRESS] tag. Readers should expect press releases to contain
    spoiler information.

14. Don’t breach copyright. Be aware that copying material from
web sites and other sources may breach copyright. "Fair use"
applies on the Internet as in all other areas. As an intro
    see the page
    http://www.ifla.org/documents/infopol/copyright/fairuse.txt

15. Don’t spam the group. Please DO NOT announce your "new/improved"
web page every day. Putting the URL and an update notice in
your .sig is acceptable, as is notifying the group of substantial
    changes to your site.

16. Subject drift. If the thread has wandered to some subject which
has absolutely nothing to do with F1, you should set follow ups to a
more appropriate group or take the subject to email.

17. Please DO NOT complain that the group doesn’t has any interesting
threads. Instead, write interesting posts yourself. If you cannot
write an interesting post, ask interesting questions. That will
provide an opportunity for someone to reply and may generate a
    worthwhile thread.

This set of etiquette rules is based on those written by Rui
Salgueiro with the help of James Connors. It will be posted
automatically before each GP, and when there is a long pause
between GPs.

If you get tired of seeing it, killfile its Subject.

Worst kept secrets

Great fun yesty with Eddie Jordan finally confirming his Ford deal
live to Sky. It’s for three years, the cars will be called Jordan
Fords and the engines will be badged Ford Cosworth RS.

Eddie never actually answered the direct question of whether the
engines would be paid for, but the did say that they wouldn’t be
costiing Jordan anything. He went on about innovative solutions adding
value for shareholders and similar managment speak. One suggestion is
that Jordan sponsors Deutsche Post and DHL may be committing to
purchase new fleets of vans and trucks from Ford Europe as part of the
deal.

No comment either on what spec the engines would be, although Eddie
claims that they will be exclusively developed for Jordan by a
separate team at Cosworth and with the involvement of Jordan
personnel…….so we can assume at least one stage below the engines
being supplied to Jaguar.

As for drivers, all Eddie would say is that Giancarlo and Taku have
contracts for next year and he is happy with them. If Deutsche Post is
an integral part of the Ford deal, however, expect to see Frentzen
back on board.

The most interesting bit of spin was Eddie thanking Honda for
releasing him from next year’s contract to allow him to take up the
Ford deal. Even Niki Lauda managed to put on a brave face and say that
the additional engine development from supplying a second competitive
team would benefit Jaguar.

Fact is, though, that this ostensibly separate Ford Europe deal with
Jordan does have approval at corporate level and does give corporate
Ford an F1 fall back if (when?) it finally decides to pull the plug on
Jaguar.

Oh, yes…and the other worst kept secret. Paul Stoddart as good as
confirmed yesty that Mark Webber will be going to Jaguar next season –
likely to be made official at Spa.
