Sid Watkins is the personality profiled in "Best of Times / Worst of

Not sure why this qualifies as "women" section, but at least it makes
a change from crappy fashion and over-priced shoes!

European GP (spoilers)

Woah.

That was eventful.  A question:

During the post-restart safety car period Hamilton was permitted
to pass to unlap himself.  Section 40.12 of the 2007 Sporting
Regulations (new this year) says:

> When the clerk of the course considers it safe to do so, and the
> message "LAPPED CARS MAY NOW OVERTAKE" is shown on the timing
> monitors, any lapped cars which were between the cars running on the
> lead lap at the time the safety car was deployed (and also remain in
> that position) will be required to pass the cars on the lead lap and
> the safety car. They must then proceed around the track at an
> appropriate speed, without overtaking, and take up position at the
> back of the line of cars behind the safety car.

My impression was that Hamilton was already at the back of the queue,
hence not between any of the unlapped cars.  Presumably he was directed
to pass – so it was OK for him to do so, by a provision of Section 40.8
– but the question is whether this was correct.

Rather fun to see a Spyker in the lead!

Shortly after starting out, they were pulled over by police for a search.

Not one, but two squad cars came to do the search.

Because they crossed lanes while going through an intersection.

If you are white, when was the last time two squad cars searched your
vehicle inch-by-inch because you crossed lanes while passing through
an intersection? Never happened to me.

The police were recorded saying a container they found "probably had drugs"
in it. It was a make-up container. [All you little people are probably guilty]

When ABC asked the police chief later why they were pulled over,
he said for crossing lanes while going through an intersection.

ABC’s cameras then showed cars doing that constantly at the same intersection.
They said they counted hundreds the same night.

The police chief then tacitly admitted they
were pulling over black people on purpose.

You monitor any group real close, you’ll get many arrests.

The implications of heavy monitoring are serious.

Watch Mosaique 1 (TF1) if ITV and RTL have adbreaks at the same time

ITV and RTL sometimes have adbreaks at the same time during a race.

If you have RTL then chances are you have Mosaique 1 too (Astra
Digital transponder 17).

This has 20 little screens at once and one, TF1 (French broadcaster)
has F1 races.

Top left-hand corner – watch that for a few minutes etc.

A little picture but better than nothing (which is what you have when
ITV and RTL are on adbreaks).

You can tell what is happening on a 21-inch TV and reasonable eyesight
(giant screen TV?)

Note: In 1997-98 this race was named the Luxembourg GP.

Note: 2003-05 was decided on "single lap". Since 2006 the grid has been
decided on a three-period knockout system. The "pole time" is no longer
necessarily the fastest time set during qualifying.

There have been 14 GPs at the new Nürburgring,
only two have been won from pole (both by MS, last in 2004),
five have been won from second (Alonso in 2007),
three have been won from third (Ralf in 2003),
one has been won from fourth (Rubens in 2002),
one from sixth (Alonso in 2005),
one from eighth (Alboreto in 1985 [German GP]),
and one from 14th (Herbert in 1999).

Average Starting Position of race winner = 3.786.

[Delayed] Top Qualifying Speeds – the Nürburgring

These comparisons only use the top speeds recorded through the regular speed
trap during the Saturday Qualifying sessions. This means that, at most events,
there are comparisons that are fairly meaningless because of some problem that
affected one or more drivers during one particular session.

The first table compares the 2006 team/driver combination with the equivalent
2007 team/driver – the same driver if possible, otherwise the 2006 driver is
compared to his 2007 replacement. This analysis is intended as a team comparison,
but the first table is also of some interest – but should be read with caution.

The second table ranks the eleven teams in order of the largest increase in
top speed, with Super Aguri making the biggest advance at the Nürburgring,
and Renault the smallest. (At some events some teams have failed to better
their top speed from 2006.

Here are the rankings at each 2007 event to date together with the
average ranking for the season so far.

[PRESS] McLaren Racing Statement – 26th July 2007

Woking, Great Britain, Thursday 26th July 2007
McLAREN RACING STATEMENT
FOLLOWING THE EXTRAORDINARY MEETING OF
THE WORLD MOTOR SPORT COUNCIL
Following an appearance by McLaren today at the FIA World Motor Sport
Council in Paris, a unanimous decision has been taken by the FIA which
in McLaren’s opinion is very balanced and fair. McLaren accepts the
that the FIA World Motor Sport Council had no alternative other than
to find that there was a purely technical breach by reason of the
possession of certain information by one individual at his home,
without McLaren’s knowledge or authority. McLaren is delighted that
the World Motor Sport Council determined that this information was not
used and accordingly imposed no sanction whatsoever on the team.
McLaren looks forward to continuing its fight in what is the most
exciting Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championship in many years.

RON DENNIS, CHAIRMAN AND CEO, McLAREN GROUP:
“There is no doubt that the past 24 days have been challenging and the
tremendous support we have received from our sponsor partners and the
public has been much appreciated. Moving forward McLaren wants to
re-affirm our long-standing commitment to honesty and integrity and
re-state that we believe we have acted correctly throughout. Now, we
have Formula 1 World Championships to win. As a result we intend to
move on, so as to maintain the focus and commitment required to do
exactly that.”

FERNANDO ALONSO:
“Having only been part of McLaren for a few months I know how
important today’s decision will be for everybody. I am looking forward
to an exciting second half of the season and to continue our battle
for both World Championships.”

LEWIS HAMILTON:
“Whilst it’s only my first season in Formula 1 with the team, I
already know and appreciate the commitment and dedication of the
people there. As a result I am pleased with today’s decision and can’t
wait for the rest of the season.”

Safety in F1; Montreal's lessons

The fact that Robert Kubica survived that horrible
accident–with remarkably little injury at that–shows
that the push for safety in F1 has resulted in some
truly amazing results.  Thanks to Sir Jackie Stewart
and the other F1 leaders who understood that racing
could be SAFE and still be EXCITING, today’s drivers
are in less danger of personal injury than ever.

However, Ant Davidson’s unfortunate experience at
Montreal shows that, despite the safety advances made
for drivers, F1′s beavers, woodchucks, and other
trackside animals, still participate in F1 only at
risk of injury and death.

Obviously, it is time for Bernie Ecclestone, Max
Mosley, and the entire FIA structure, to address,
seriously and comprehensively, the issue of
beaver safety in F1.  Strict new rules must be
drafted, new beaver safety equipment must be
devised, tested, and approved, and beaver safety
compliance must be assured by the strictest level
of scrutineering available.

The time is NOW for beaver safety in F1.  Let’s all
support this important issue.
