Discussion of Formula One racing

First-time GPs

When I went to the first F1 race at Long Beach (1976) there was a (Ferrari
:-( procession.

The wisdom of the day was that with a new track the chances are that only
one team will ‘get it right’ and the rest will struggle.  That year the
events matched the theory.

Does the theory still hold?  Trying to think of other ‘first events’:
Donnington ’93 was hotly (actually wetly) contested.  Malaysia last year
was, umm, suspenseful but not dramatic.

Any other observations of ‘firsts’ relevant to this weekend’s festivities?

Keith

Donnington was a track which most european drivers had driven at one
time or another, so I don’t think they had too much trouble with it.
Rain always causes havoc with the usual order of qualifying (check the
weather reports for the USGP this weekend… :-)

Malaysia is a smooth, new track, with few surprises. The teams could
probably use a lot of setup data from similar tracks. The USGP at Indy
has a unique layout which could make setups difficult.

I think the big boys (red and silver) will be the ones to get it right
    first, as usual.

Mine was in ’76 as well.  Mosport, in Canada.  James Hunt in a McLaren.  We
all needed haircuts when I look at the pics!

    Since, I’ve enjoyed many more.

As a point of information, the selling of unwanted F1 race tickets at
or below face value is specifically allowed for in the charter. The
exception is in place. (Good luck, wish I could use them, but it’s a
    bit far ;-) .)
