Has Cristiano da Matta inked the contract with Toyota yet? He has a big
enough points lead to clinch the 2002 CART FedEx Championship Series title.
So, now that that is wrapped up, the move to the Toyota F1 team can’t be too
far away.

The deal has been done for a while now….certainly before the USGP
and before the CART ‘race’ on that ludicrous Miami circuit. The
announcement will be made this weekend at Toyota’s home race.

But it wasn’t, was it? I wonder what is holding things up this time?

Is da Matta exploring other options?

Autosport says Toyota still hasn’t agreed terms with Newman Haas for
Cristiano’s release. If the deal goes belly up, the place will be
taken be either Helio Castro Neves or Massa. The one thing which is
definite is that the driver will be Brazilian. This is apparently of
strategic importance to Toyota’s marketing division.

After dominating CART this year, I’m sure it’s tempting to stay and
dominate for another year, rather than being a backmarker in F1. He’s
probably waiting as long as possible to get some indication on what
will happen with CART next year (since it’s still in doubt whether
there will be enough teams and cars to get a 2003 CART season).
Reminds me of Kenny Bräck, who was offered a drive for Arrows in the
mid -90s. He more or less shocked the F1 world by declining the offer,
simply because he refused to be uncompetitive. Instead he went to IRL
and then CART, where he’s been a top driver ever since (despite a lot
of bad luck this year). Winning IRL, Indy 500 and several CART races
sounds a lot more interesting than one or two years as a backmarker in
F1.

Apparently da Matta is adamant that he does not want any involvement with
IRL. He continually refuses to confirm the move to F1. I can’t believe that
this whole deal is so secretive.
