Normally I’d put spoiler space in here, but as it’s well after 48 hours
after the race they aren’t really required. Besides, I’m going to spend the
first couple of paragraphs talking about the coverage rather than the race
so you’re probably safe anyway.
I have been in Tenerife for the past 8 days so I was forced to watch the
race on one of the few channels available to me. I missed qualifying and
free practise of course (and so I didn’t see <SPOILER DELETED> until I got
home and watched my video). I wandered down the street looking into bars for
one showing the race and found one showing it on RTL. Maybe if I walked
further I could have found one showing it on Canal+, but I didn’t want to
miss the start.
I was fairly impressed with RTL from the build-up. Admittedly the only
German I can remember is "Vie common am besten zur Bahnhoff bitte" and how
to count up to ten but I was nevertheless impressed that they had a Jordan
in the studio and had Nikki Lauda as a guest on the show. I thought, this
has got to be good.
Except when the first ad break came on. And stayed on. For what seemed like
ten minutes. And when we came back, there was no recap, no nothing. And this
happened 3 or 4 times through the race. I will never say a bad word against
ITV again.
Also I noticed how much of my enjoyment of Formula One comes from the
commentators; from Murray & Martin joking about, from James Allen digging
the dirt in the pits and Louise Goodman – yes, I missed Louise! – chatting
to the drivers when they fall out. It was the most boring two hours I have
ever spent watching TV. Now I know why the "outsider" finds F1 so dull. It
was a whole different race watching it on ITV when I got home, admittedly
just as dull a race but the coverage was excellent and I didn’t mind
watching it at all.
WARNING: you are now entering SPOILER territory.
Firstly, those BAR accidents. Wow. I’m amazed that neither driver was
injured! Much kudos to the BAR team for getting two cars onto the grid for
the off, shame one of them never made it but congratulations to Villeneuve
for breaking his duck.
About the McLaren incident at La Source… well not much to say really, it
was a racing accident as far as I;m concerned. If I were forced to lay blame
I’d put it on Hakkinen’s shoulders but I don’t think that’s needed;
certainly Mika was angry with David – you could tell by the way he was
conspicuous by his absence from the champagne-fest and his manner in the
post-race press conference. It remains to be seen how this shakes out. I’m
glad that McLaren are letting their boys fight it out on the track.
Nice to see Zanardi driving near the top of the field for a change, and Ralf
did himself proud once again.
Not a lot else to say really. Hardly anything happened in the race I
watched!

RTL is sooooooooooo crap. Now you know why so many germans are p**** ***
with the F1-coverage.

I miss Eurosport and Watson/Edwards very much. The coverage was superb!
I watched Spa on DF1 (pay TV) – and they do a good job with Marc Surer.
But it`s too expensive (50 DM at least).
So most people in germany have to watch crap RTL with all together 21 (!!)
minutes commercial breaks!

In hindsight, I’m glad that I didn’t actually miss anything because of those
ad breaks. The worst one, in my view, was when they cut away from the race
just as Irvine crossed the line! They didn’t even bother to stay with the
race to watch everyone come home. I couldn’t for the life of me remember who
was 5th and I wanted to see Hill come home in the points too. I didn’t
bother to stay watching for the wind-down back in the studio.
As for ITV’s coverage… I notice that Martin’s pit-walk is back in, but
"Murray Meets…" has disappeared. Perhaps no-one thinks they can top the
Bernie interview they did last time?

You could always try to pick up the Swiss national channel. Do they
broadcast in Germany? In Switzerland (don’t let my .ca fool you) we
receive RTL and DSF. SF2 (Schweizer Fernseher) is much better in my
opinion. Very few commercial breaks, and quite animated commentators. Of
course, I hear that Germans have some problems with the Schwyzer
Tueuetsch, so it might be that much more fun to watch.

IIRC it was billed as an ‘occasional series of interviews’…

Tenerife is Spanish territory and TVE3 (I think, might be 2 since
the "1999 F1 TV list" says so) covers F1. Should have been available
in your hotel (if you were in a hotel).
Since almost anything has less adverts than RTL, it would have probably
been a better option. OTOH, I think RTL starts their transmission earlier
than other TV stations (RTP starts only right before the race and they
interrupt immediately to show an advert during the warm-up lap), so maybe
that explains why you found RTL first.

I was in an apartment, and my (rented) TV gave me the following Sporty
options: RTL, Canal+, Eurosport (in German). I didn’t get any signal worth
watching on any of them so I went out to the pubs along the front. The first
I came to was showing RTL and since it was minutes before the start I just
sat down! Later on I sent my other half along the front (she was bored
anyway) to see if anywhere was showing it in English. She said she found
another pub not showing RTL but it was still a foreign language, I assumed
it was Canal+. I don’t think Tenerife has the full Spanish bouquet of
channels as it were (without a whopping huge dish at least).

I have no problems with Marc Surer so…
And remember – anything is better than the RTL-F1 presentation.
But it`s a problem to get SF2 in Germany (Hamburg) – it`s not on Astra
or Eutelsat. Do you know how I might get it?

To be honest, I don’t know his name. He does sports commentary for more
than just F1, so they bring in some "experts" for the races. I can’t say
that they are always as informed as the British commentators, but at least
they have some enthusiasm (perhaps too much for Sauber), and there aren’t
the irritating Werbungen that seem to go forerver on RTL.

Marc Surer is usually speaking Hochdeutsch when he’s on the tele, but his
dialect isn’t too heavy anyway, judging by candid interviews. The main
commentator on SF really lays it on thick with the guttural "ch",
trademark of the Swiss, and also all the other little changes one gets
used to with time.

I’m sorry… no idea.

The problem is, that RTL has the Free-TV monopol in Germany. So the
broadcast no other channels which show F1 exept Pay-TV (DF1). And that is
expencive. So if you don’t want to spend so much money just to get lots of
unusefull channels which you have to take too, you just have the opportunity
to watch RTL.

All Swiss Channels are available on Hotbird, but crypted in Viaccess.
Smartcards are easy to get, almost for free. SF2 in german, TSI2 in
Italian and TSR2 in French.
