for fun – Herman Tilke is making another outing in a V8-Star (spaceframe
with lookalike bodywork) "Jaguar" at the Nurburgring 24 Hours.
The irony of it is just too much sometimes, isn’t it? – the guy who’s
kneeing F1 in the groin taking part in a great enthusiast race on a
great enthusiast circuit ;(
(His car won in the last 4 (6?) hour race there…)

I have a question about Monaco.
Why was JP Montoya a lap down?
I was away at a race, and it did not record.
No write ups I’ve read clarify this.
Even if he were way off pace,
(I note RS was going a lap down around
lap 41 Alonso accident) why JPM 1 lap down?
Had he already been lapped before accident?
JPM has a lot of experience with pace cars
coming out and yellow flag laps (from CART etc.).
Nigel Roebuck makes it sound like as the safety car
came out to pick up the leader, Trulli and JPM pitted,
giving lead to MS. Then JPM pulled out on track
in the train immediately behind MS.
If Trulli knew safety car was coming out and
choose then to pit, JPM should have known it.
If JPM had been (on track) in front of MS, he
should have delayed his stop to pit a lap later,
thus staying on lead lap, at end of train with
35 or so laps left.
Or, if MS had already lapped JPM, how did JPM
pass Trulli to be ahead in the train (faster pitstop??)

As the old adage goes, ‘silence is golden’ and this weekend, Monaco
Grand Prix winner Jarno Trulli is having to prove it. The Italian lost
his voice earlier this week, but has been his usual smiling presence
in the paddock – just a little quieter than normal. The situation has
given the international media some headaches as they have tried in
vain to record the thoughts and impressions of Formula One’s newest
Grand Prix winner, but spare a thought for another group. the Renault
F1 Team race engineers.
In effect, a silent driver has the potential to cause many problems.
With efficiency at a premium under the new one engine per weekend
rules, time is precious – and it is critical for the driver to be able
to communicate his impressions accurately and concisely over the
radio. But what to do when the driver cannot talk?
"Jarno losing his voice has been another small challenge to adapt to
this weekend," explained Executive Director of Engineering Pat
Symonds. "He and his race engineer Alan (Permane) have been
communicating in writing. Each time Jarno comes back into the garage,
he has a pen and paper in the car, and he has been writing answers to
the questions Alan asks. This may have been a slight hindrance during
the sessions, but when debriefing, Jarno has been scribbling away
merrily in the engineering truck, and his speed certainly doesn’t seem
to have suffered!"
Assuming the situation doesn’t improve for tomorrow though, what can
be done in the race? Holding up a sheet of paper with set-up changes
on it as you pass the pit-wall is hardly an option. "Well, we will
just have to employ a little lateral-thinking," concludes Pat. "In
effect, Jarno will end up communicating over the radio by a form of
morse code that we will devise this evening." Just another small
instance of how a team must remain adaptable at all times.

Prevent Aircraft from Becoming Missiles

Independent Presidential Candidate Ralph Nader today urged the 9/11
Commission to highlight the failure of the Bush and Clinton
Administrations to take action to re-enforce the doors of aircraft
cockpits noting: "This single safety step could have thwarted the events
of September 11."
On April 8, when Condolezza Rice testified before the Commission
Investigating September 11, she acknowledged that hardening the cockpits
could have made a difference: "That would have made a difference. We
weren’t going to harden cockpits in the three months that we had a
threat spike."
In fact, the US government had more than enough information prior to the
information generated in the months prior to 9/11 to have taken action
to re-enforce cockpit doors to thwart hijackers and terrorists. In
addition to official intelligence scenarios about the potential for
hijacked planes being used in terrorist attacks in the US against
buildings, there have been 167 hijackings involving US airlines and 11
hijackings involving foreign airlines on US soil since 1970.
"It has been evident for decades that we needed to harden cockpit doors
and strengthen their latches. Some foreign airlines have installed just
that safeguard. The failure of the federal government for years to
address this despite clear evidence of the need is a tribute to how our
government has deregulated mechanisms for national security. The
resistance by airlines and aircraft manufacturers sent the soporific FAA
into inaction, despite long time requests for action by safety groups
and aviation security experts. If our government, sometime over the last
30 years, had been responsive, this single act would have made it much
more difficult for the terrorism of 9/11 to have succeeded in turning

our website code embedded in the body of the email with hidden tags that
