No, this is not being investigated. It all came out in 97 when the donation
took place, but it is all being raked up again because a git, who used to
host a political debate program on TV (Channel 4 if I remember correctly),
has come out with a crap book and needs to do some mud raking to encourage
sales! I basically ain’t heard anything new of any substance…

The problem is not with the donation, Richard, which was perfectly
legal and above board, but that Blair and senior members of his
government are alleged to have lied about it.

Bernie gave US$ 1 million to the Labour Party prior to the last
British general election. One of the things that the new
government did was to grant F1 racing an exemption from the
general ban on tobacco advertising at sporting events. Awhile
thereafter news of the donation to the Labour Party reached
the public press, there was a big stink about it, and the
Labour Party eventually was forced to give Bernie back his
money. The incident then seemed to blow over. Now some
Conservative MPs are calling for an investigation of the
role of the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the whole affair.
It certainly was an unwise move on the Labour Party’s part to
accept that donation. Even if the exemption for F1 was
in the country’s best interests, it ends up looking like
some sort of quid pro quo arrangement. And the fact that
Bernie ends up both with his favour AND his money back
makes it look like the Labour Party doesn’t even know how
to take bribes properly.

Nothing new, but the Conservatives are using the book as an
excuse to bring this up again and rattle the Labour Party’s
cage a bit.
